The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Playroom

should i have a playroomEveryone knows that children need play. It’s an important part of their development. So as parents, we have to encourage as much playtime as we can. But how does a playroom fit into that? Well, there are some advantages and disadvantages…

Advantages to having a playroom

  • You have a dedicated space for toys so they aren’t dragged all over the house. That is, of course, if you can convince your kids to keep the toys in that room.
  • You don’t have to tidy the room up if company arrives. You can just close the door and no one is the wiser that a hurricane passed through that room.
  • It’s easy to keep things organized because the room doesn’t share space with other furniture, like beds and dressers. You can throw up a LOT of shelving when you have exposed walls.
  • The kids associate their bedrooms as sleep spaces, which helps put them in the mood to sleep when they’re in the room. They won’t be distracted by their toys when they try to go to sleep at night or wake up in the middle of the night.
  • You can create dedicated stations that facilitate learning and healthy play, like a coloring/craft station, a dress-up station, a reading station, etc.

Disadvantages to having a playroom

  • This room will ALWAYS be a mess. There’s no stopping it. For your own sanity, just give up and never expect it to be clean. If it embarrasses you when company stops by, close the door. If you’re one of those people who need tidy rooms, a playroom will test your patience.
  • A playroom keeps your kids away from you. While you’re elsewhere in the house, you won’t be able to easily mind the kids unless the room in close to the more public spaces.
  • Kids tend to like to play near other people, even adults, so yours might not even use the room. Instead, they’ll drag toys out to the common areas.
  • There could be a tough adjustment period if at some point you have to give the playroom away to a new baby or a growing sibling.
  • Children need to be inspired by their playthings, which can’t happen if everything is tucked away into one room. They need to be able to spontaneously pick up a doll or block, so there are advantages to leaving toys spread out that a playroom prohibits.

What are your thoughts? Do you have a playroom in your home?
