How Much Screen Time is Too Much for Kids?

How Much Screen Time is Too Much for KidsThe American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than two hours per day of screen time. For children under two years, they recommend none at all. I think that’s a bit impractical because there are plenty of educational shows that are good for kids. And honestly, sometimes you just need to make dinner without being interrupted and the TV makes a helpful short-term babysitter. I don’t think it disrupts the development of kids too much

However, like all things, there’s a limit. There comes a point when kids become dependent on screen time for entertainment and their ability to have creative, imaginative play suffers. Here are some signs you should look out for that your kids spend too much time looking at screens.

They are sleep deprived because they spend too much time watching TV or playing games

Screens are stimulating. They keep our brains engaged, which is pleasing. If your kids are staying up late to watch TV or getting up early to play games, their overall development may be compromised.

Children absolutely need sleep in order for their bodies and minds to grow. Other than keeping them fed, helping them sleep is the most important thing a parent can do.

End screen time at least thirty minutes before bed so their minds can quiet down. Insist they remain off during bed time and nap times.

They are becoming overweight

Kids have metabolisms that we adults envy. They can burn through energy quickly because they’re also using it to grow their bodies. So if your child is gaining weight, it might be because he/she is spending too much time sitting down in front of screens.

Early obesity can lead to lifelong problems, like diabetes, heart disease, and joint issues. Spend active time with your kids so they can be entertained without looking at a screen.

They lack social skills and/or are very aggressive

Every moment your child spends engrossed in a screen is a moment he/she isn’t socializing with other people and learning how to properly behave. As they get older, they may engage in screen-based activities that require socialization, but that isn’t the case for babies and small children.

By not interacting with people, your child may be unsure how to behave in situations. This can lead to frustration and eventually aggressive. Plus there is a correlation between violent TV shows/games and violent behaviors later in life. Again, the only solution is to turn the screens off.

Have you ever dealt with a child who spends too much time in front of screens? How did you respond?
