7 Ways to Encourage Your Baby’s Development

Ways to Encourage Your Baby’s DevelopmentAs parents, the one thing we want more than anything is a healthy child. That means ensuring that they develop and learn all their new skills right on time. Here are some ways you can encourage your child’s development.

1. Provide security

This isn’t just important for infants. One and two year olds need security. They need to know that their needs will be met by their parents. Respond to their needs promptly, like feeding, sleeping and eating. Once you’ve built predictable routines so your child knows they don’t have to worry, you’ll have created an environment that lets them focus on growing and developing.

2. Stimulate her senses

Everything is new to your child. You can stimulate her brain to work things out by giving it plenty of information. Let her touch new textures, experience new smells, and see vivid and intriguing sights. Don’t run in with a napkin when she picks up a clump of dirt or sticks her hands in the sink.

3. Introduce toys

This one is a no-brainer, but it doesn’t mean you have to fill your house with expensive, light-up, sing-a-long toys. Babies will play with just about anything. Yes, music and colors are great, but if you’ve ever seen a baby explore a frying pan or a shoe for 20 minutes, you know what I mean.

4. Give plenty of tummy time

Since babies do most of their sleeping on their back, their cores, legs, arms and neck muscles don’t get the best workout. These muscles are crucial for crawling and walking. Try tummy time the first times by putting your baby on your best. She’ll lift herself up to gaze into your face. As she gets stronger, lay her on the floor with toys and stimulating things.

5. Turn off the TV

I’m a realist who understands that kids will watch cartoons. It’s an easy way to occupy them while you throw a load of laundry in or get ready for work. But the TV is easy entertainment; it doesn’t require your kids to interact in any way. Whenever possible, leave it off and save it for a treat.

6. Include her in everyday tasks

Sorting laundry, tidying up a room, and dusting are all boring tasks, but they’re new and exciting to little kids. When you involve them in the things mom and dad do, you improve their language and reasoning skills, their motor skills, and you make them feel like part of the family.

7. Connect with your child

The most important thing you can do to help your baby grow is to give her LOTS of attention and affection. Even though your baby can’t understand, talk to her often. Pause as if you expect a response, like you would in dialogue. Give plenty of physical contact and bring your child close to your face so she can see you clearly.
