6 Sun Protection Safety Tips for Kids

Sun Protection Safety Tips for KidsWe’ve reached that point in the summer where the sun is as strong as ever. While this may be enjoyable for some, the dangers of it must be considered as well – especially for young kids. Whether they’re just going outside to play, or a full day at the beach, precautions should be made. Here are some sun protection safety tips to follow:

1. Sunscreen

Let’s start with the most obvious protection tip: sunscreen. Make sure you apply the sunscreen properly and generously 30 minutes before your child goes out in the sun. Choose a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, and don’t forget to get the entire body, including ears, nose, hands, feet, and even lips.

2. Limit Outdoor Time

The sun’s rays are typically the strongest between 10am and 4pm, so try to limit your child’s outdoor time during this window. Even on cloudy or cooler days, ultraviolet rays can still be very strong and dangerous. It’s tough to tell your children no during peak playing hours, so refer to the previous tip if they are out during this time.

3. Provide Cover

Wearing sufficient clothing and accessories is another way to provide protection from the sun. Something as simple as a cap will help to protect most of your child’s face from UV rays. For younger kids, invest in some sunglasses that will protect their eyes from the sun as well.

4. Medications

Make sure you know all the side effects of any medications your child may be taking. Some of them can increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun, so if you’re not positive, it’s best to call your doctor to see. Prescription antibiotics and acne medications are the most likely culprits.

5. Shade

During the very sunny days when your children have to be outside, try to emphasize finding shade to them. Whether it’s underneath a tree or building, or bringing an umbrella to the beach with them, any breaks from the sun’s UV rays will be good for their skin.

6. Good Example

Whether you’ve noticed it by now or not, your children are always watching you as an example of how they should act. Setting a good example with sun safety is necessary to show your kids how important it really is. Make sure you’re putting on sunscreen and taking all precautions before forcing them to do any of them so they know they’re not alone.
