Like all of us, kids have their own unique idea of what style is—especially a toddler begging to dress him or herself for the first time. As your little one finds an individual style, it’s a great opportunity to instill some rules that’ll save you the headache of a pants-free inspired preschool incident. Here are some good tips to get you started:
No Pants? No Good: Although pants are an integral part in our daily wardrobe, your little tyke might opt a strictly-diaper mentality when it comes to their clothes. Instill in them a love for pants and leggings, explaining that these will provide leg protection for those out-of-this-world adventures they’ll have later in the backyard.
It’s okay to take fashion risks: Tiara? Check. Cowboy Boots? Double check. Bright pink Rainbow Unicorn Doodle Pants? Good to go! Make sure your child knows that any style they choose—no matter how many clashing prints they might choose—is a good style if it’s the one they love. Don’t shame them into muted colors if they love funky prints and designs; let their imagination show through their clothes!
Children need to make their own fashion choices: Anything washed, folded, and in a drawer is free game. Let your toddler explore their clothing options, including the ridiculous Spiderman costume they decided would be oh-so-shiny when coated in red glitter. They may leave a trail of red sparkle on your floor as they save the day from the evil monster living in your couch, but they’ll feel confident and comfortable in the choice they’ve made. Simply, if they love it, they should wear it, and you encourage them to embrace their freedom of choice.
