We become robotic about changing diapers after the first month of parenthood… except for the blowouts. No matter how many super messes you clean up, they’re always just as painful. Here’s how you can prevent them.
1. Choose the right size diaper
As much as you’d love your kids to stay little, they will grow and need larger diapers. Plus, babies come in all different sizes and it’s quite possible that the standard size for your child’s age is too big or small. Blowouts are more likely in a diaper that’s too small, so make sure you have bigger diapers ready.
A diaper that fits well is snug. The waist should come up to the belly button. The cuffs around your baby’s legs should be pulled out to create a liquid seal.
2. Use quality diapers
Cheap diapers don’t use enough absorbent material to catch the volume of your baby’s urine or waste. I understanding your desire to keep your costs low (and diapers sure are expensive), but you’ll just end up making bigger messes and going through them faster if you skimp.
3. Learn your baby’s schedule
This won’t be able to track when your baby is young and eating every few hours, but after a year you’ll likely be feeding on a consistent breakfast-lunch-dinner schedule. At this time you’ll notice trends in your baby’s elimination schedule, just like an adults have. Maybe your child is a morning pooper or afternoon pooper. If you’re ready for the mess, you can get to it quicker.
4. Be prepared for changes
Whenever you change or add new things to your child’s diet, you’ll get a few days (or maybe weeks) of less-than-pleasant poops. This can be caused by the introduction of new food, medications, or a change in formula. Change diapers more often to account for this so there’s no mess.
5. Wear the right clothing
Tight clothing without room to stretch can constrict the diaper, limiting the amount of space inside for waste and urine to settle. This can squeeze the contents out the sides. Opt for clothing designed for movement and play that makes room in the booty puffy diapers. With Doodle Pants, you don’t have to sacrifice adorableness for functionality!
6. Change dirty diapers right away
Urine is quickly absorbed by a diaper so it’s contained within the diaper material and isn’t sitting against your baby’s skin. But solid waste just sits in there. If you don’t get to a dirty diaper quickly, your child’s regular play and movement can squish the contents around and eventually work them out the edges. As soon as you notice the mess, handle it promptly.
